Marley Marl: From the SP 1200 to Ableton

Shout out to Kevin Nottingham on the link. Marley Marl is showing how to embrace technology in a Hip Hop manner by bridging the old with the new. He is using a contoller that Akai made that works in conjuction with the Ableton software, which gives you a “hands on” feel plus the benefits of computer-based production. I know (personally speaking) that it’s tough to part ways with the outboard gear that is/was such a integral part of Hip Hop production (i.e. Emu SP 1200, Akai MPC series drum machines, Ensoniq ASR-10, etc). Companies such as Native Instruments with Maschine and Motu with BPM are helping make the transition much more fluid and painless in addition to Ableton. Still not convinced though, watch and see how a pioneer and one the best gets down on his software game.
